So greetings from
Kampala...we have nearly made it through week 2 and so much has happened
it's hard to believe we are only 10 days here so far. I'm writing this from
an internet cafe, cause we have had some difficulty with the laptop
(unfortunately) and I don't know if I'll be able to update the website
anymore...ah well. I'll do it when we get home...it's such a shame 'cause it
only took me 2 hours to set up the internet connection over here!!!!
Since I last wrote we have ploughed on with the painting and we are almost
at the end of it all. The blue and white went on well inside and as the
paint is a lot thinner over here everything needed at least 3 coats. Still
we did take time every day to play with the kids and while I know that we'll
be meeting a whole new bunch of children next week for the sports camp I
think the ones at Kosovo will always be in our hearts. As we leave every day
they say...'Take us with you to Ireland'.... so suffice it to say that a
number of us are seriously considering sponsoring a child over here (E 16 /
month) and that covers school fees, packed lunch, uniform, sports gear,
transport to and fro from school if needed and a gift for the child at
Christmas ...last year it was a matress....good value eh?
On Sunday we were invited to the school for the official opening service (
it doubles as a church on Sunday) and it took a lot of getting used
to!!!.....3 hours later it was still the service and we hadn't even got to
the official opening at that stage, but it was very interesting and lively
and full of colour and I can think of worse ways to spend a few hours on a
sunday morning! We were given Ugandan food for dinner, but it was a bit
stodgy for us...the staple here is a paste made from green bananas.
We were supposed to go and see some African dancing in the evening but
everyone was wrecked, so we'll go another time.
On Monday we had a day off and headed up country to Jinja....the source of
the Nile. We went out a ferry boat to see the point where the water of the
Nile springs up and then we headed to the waterfalls....everything was
beautiful. Uganda is such a beautiful green country, as we drove to Jinja we
passed tea plantations, and sugar cane fields and everyone on the side of
the road selling pineapples and mangos and jackfruit (which I still have to
try). and the woman wear the most colourful outfits.
Anyway it was a wonderful day and of course the next day we were back to
painting....still we've found a swimming pool close by and we tend to go
there after the work at about 5 to cool down.....life's not too bad really
